Write you language in Hangeul "Video Contest"

Eligibility and contest schedule

Eligibility

  • Any foreigner who can read and write Hangeu​l.
  • You can be living in Korea or any other country.
  • Nonnative (international) speakers of Korean

Contest schedule

  • Video submission open: June 1, 2023 ~ August 31, 2023
  • Winner announcement: October 9, 2023 (to be posted on https://hangeul-festa.org)

How to apply

  • Choose a category and create your video.
  • Upload the video to YouTube, etc. and make the privacy settings "public" or "partially public".
  • Share the video link by clicking ‘Submit’ to enter the contest.

Contest categories

There are three categories. (Only one may be applied for.)

Be a singer (Write lyrics in Hangeul)

  • Sing ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ in your own language, rewrite the lyrics phonetically in Hangeul, translate the lyrics fully into Korean, submit it as a video (including subtitles).
  • If the song has multiple verses, only include the first verse.
  • You don’t have to sing in a Korean ‘accent’. Use your natural voice accent.
  • Here is an example of the first verse of the song ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ in Korean.

동쪽 하늘에서도 서쪽 하늘에서도

반짝반짝 작은 별 아름답게 비치네

    1. Write the lyrics to this song in your native language. 
    2. Write the lyrics phonetically in Hangeul. 
    3. Translate them fully using Korean vocabulary grammar.
  • Record a video of yourself singing the song, include ①, ②, ③ organized into three levels of subtitles on the screen.
  • Check out the reference videos below.

Be a storyteller (Write a story in Hangeul)

  • Tell the story of ‘The North Wind the Sun’ in your own language, rewrite the words phonetically in Hangeul, translate fully into Korean, submit as a video (including subtitles).
  • The following is an example of the story ‘The North Wind the Sun’ in Korean. (You don’t have to speak in a Korean ‘accent’. Tell the story with your natural voice.)

바람과 해님이 자기가 더 세다고 다투고 있었어요. 그때 두꺼운 외투를 입은 나그네가 지나갔어요. 바람과 해님은 나그네의 외투를 먼저 벗기는 쪽이 더 세다고 하기로 했어요. 바람이 있는 힘껏 불수록 나그네는 외투를 더 단단히 여몄어요. 해님이 따스하게 내리쬐자 나그네는 얼른 외투를 벗어버렸어요. 결국 해님이 이겼답니다.​

    1. Write the story in your native language. 
    2. Rewrite the words phonetically in Hangeul. 
    3. Translate the words fully using Korean vocabulary grammar.
  • Record a video of yourself reading the story in your own language include ①, ②, ③ organized into three levels of subtitles on the screen.

Be King Sejong (Teacher’s Challenge: Read, translate and rewrite in Hangeul)

  • Recite in Korean the preface to ‘The Hunmin Jeongeum’, the original instruction book of Hangeul written by King Sejong the Great.
  • Translate and recite the preface to ‘The Hunmin Jeongeum’ in your own language. Rewrite it phonetically in Hangeul and submit it as a video.
  • The (a) below is the preface to ‘The Hunmin Jeongeum’ (b) is a contempary Korean translation of the text yet to translate into different languages.
    • (a) Preface to the Hunmin Jeongeum : (You may pronounce 'Arae a' as [아] and you may also ignore 'Side-Dots'.)
    • ​*Please refer to "Available resources" in this homepage or the YouTube sample video on "Hangeul festa" for exercising recitation.
    • (b) Contemporary Korean translation of the preface to the Hunmin Jeongeum:

우리나라 말이 중국 말과 다르므로

한자로는 서로 통하지 않는다.

이런 이유로 글을 모르는 백성은 하고 싶은 말이 있어도

결국은 자신의 뜻을 글로 표현하지 못하는 사람이 많다.

내가 이를 위하여 딱하게 여겨 새로 28자를 만드니

사람마다 쉽게 익혀서 매일 쓰는 데 편하게 하고자 할 따름이다.

    1. Recite (a). 
    2. Translate the contents into your own language by referring to (b). 
    3. Read your translation, 
    4. write the words phonetically in Hangeul. 
    5. Write the Korean equivalent of your translated passage.
  • Make a video by combining the readings of ①, ③ and the three lines of ②, ④, ⑤.

*The paragraph has a vowel letter called 'Arae-a'. (ex: )  Many scholars believe its pronunciation was [ʌ], but you may pronounce 'Arae-a' as [아] for the contest.

*The side dots were used for the pitch representation, but you may ignore their pitch value for the contest.

Selection Criteria and Awards

Selection Criteria

  • Accuracy (40%): Consistent and accurate Hangeul notation of the sound of the language.
  • Efficiency (30%): The transcription presented is uncomplicated and convenient.
  • Creativity (20%): The method adopted for the transcription is accurate and the transcription is creative and reasonable.
  • Artistry (10%): Visual beauty
  • Top prizes will be awarded depending on the evaluation results. Therefore, if the standards are lower than expected, certain prizes may not be given.​

Awards ($31,000 total prize amount)

  • Grand Prize: 1 prize(Eutteum Award​), Certificate and a $5,000 cash prize
  • 1st runners-up: 3 prizes, certificate and a cash prize of $2,000
    • Chairman of the Korean Language Society Award (1 prize)
    • Director of the Hangeul Nuri Institute Award (1 prize)
    • Chairman of the Hunmin Jeongeum Society Award (1 prize)
  • 2nd runners-up: 5 prizes(Beogeum Awards​), certificate and a cash prize of $1,000
  • 3rd runners-up: 30 prizes(Boram Awards​), certificate and $300 cash prizes (10 in each category)
  • 4th runners-up: 60 prizes(Bukdodum Awards​), Certificate and a cash prize of $100
*The list of winners will be announced collectively here on this homepage (https://hangeul-festa.org) on October 9. Winners and non-winners will not be individually notified.​​

Attention

Contest Rules

  • You may apply for only one category of the competition.
  • At the beginning of the video, the participant's voice must announce the language he or she uses.
  • The song or story must be recorded (spoken or sung) by the participant, not by other person.
  • Videos for 'Be a singer' and 'Be a storyteller' must include all three of the followings: its phonetical transcription in Hangeul and a translation fully in Korean.
  • Videos for 'Be King Sejong' must include all three of the followings: your recitation in Korean, its translation into your language and a phonetical transcription of your translation fully in Hangeul.
  • If there is no writing system for your native language, you may use Latin alphabet or any other scripts that you are familiar with.
  • You can write old Hangeul characters that are no longer in use or diacritics.​ 

Copyrights

  • If background music or images are used, there must be no copyright issues.
  • Music images provided in the 'Available resources' section of our homepage can be used freely.
  • The applicants have all copyrights of the work, including moral rights of authorship copyright property.
  • The Hangeul Nuri Foundation has the right to freely utilize the copyright property of the work to the extent necessary for the foundation to achieve the purposes and objectives of the contest. ​

Taxes charges​

  • Taxes charges on the prize money will be paid by the prize winners.​
