Supported by

Background

Community-centered relations continue to be the focal to the ASEAN-Korea partnership.  Particularly, this has provided vast opportunities for greater participation and engagement for youths in both regions to contribute towards solidifying the partnership between ASEAN and Korea and promoting its integration. As the future leaders of the ASEAN-Korea community and potential beneficiaries of a sustainable ASEAN-Korea partnership, it is critical for youth to have avid interests in emerging issues or ongoing developments relevant to ASEAN-Korea relations, fostering deeper understanding and possibly contributing to bridging perception gaps. The concept of community is also emphasized specifically in the Korea-ASEAN Solidarity Initiative (KASI), the ROK’s regional strategic framework tailored to ASEAN, and the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP). To realize these efforts and synergies built in KASI and AOIP, the ASEAN-Korea Centre (AKC) in collaboration with Pukyong National University (PKNU) and the National University of Laos (NUOL), is hosting the ‘2024 ASEAN-Korea Academic Essay Contest’. The Contest aims to provide an avenue for students to thoroughly conduct research and share their knowledge and insights on ASEAN and ASEAN-Korea relations-related matters.

We are inviting graduate and undergraduate students of ASEAN and Korean nationalities to participate in the Contest by submitting original, yet coherent essays on offering the way forward to further strengthen ASEAN- Korea relations and cooperation towards a more sustainable partnership. Interested applicants are highly recommended to work with the guidance of an academic advisor when writing both the proposal and the full-developed essay, individually.

Theme

Way Forward to Enhance ASEAN-Korea Relations in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) Era.

In 2024, bolstering youth’s active engagement continues to remain one of the priority cooperation areas. At the 24th ASEAN-ROK Summit last September, the Leaders emphasized and recognized the pivotal role of youth exchanges in fostering mutual understanding and trust between ASEAN and Korea. This echoes ROK’s aspiration to cement participation and engagement with the youth population. More importantly, 2024 is a special year as it observes a commemoration of the 35th anniversary of ASEAN-Korea Dialogue Relations, with an anticipation to the elevation of the ASEAN-Korea Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, alongside the 15th anniversary of the AKC's establishment. In this milestone year, the AKC remains steadfast in its commitment to empowering youth to shape the future relationship between ASEAN and Korea. By inviting prospective students to express their fresh and original ideas, the AKC is actively promoting youth engagement and empowerment in taking the lead and shaping the pathway forward in further strengthening ASEAN and ASEAN-Korea Relations in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Era.
